When I’m browsing YouTube and other “music” sites, I see that the most popular songs are from people like Chris Brown, Justin Bieber, One Direction and PSY. They usually have about five million views and way up. What also making me “upset” is that some people like the music because the singer is “sexy/cute”. One bit*h (sorry for the language) came to me and said “f*ck that crap song, let’s listen to jb”. Please tell me why it is like this!

Because people like what is “catchy.” Catchy is a lot of times mediocre. Indie, alternative, classical, and the creative side of electronic don’t have too many listeners because even though they’re great, they’re not as catchy as Rihanna or another pop artist. I feel the same way as you do. I am not happy that this bubblegum pop marinated with Auto-Tune is popular, but we can’t change that much. I got lucky (and maybe you did too if you like alternative) when Pumped Up Kicks became popular. That happens sometimes, but we’ll just have to accept that most of the time, the best music won’t be popular.

Well, you see. Back when The Beatles were popular, they invented a whole new Genre. Rock and roll. Rock and Roll was basically a version of the blues, where 3 instruments at most were used. The bass guitar, the guitar and the drums. From rock and roll came a whole variety of other music, like metal, hard rock, punk rock, grunge… Then, we step into the time when Green Day released their third studio album, Dookie. That was around the time when musicians started using computers to record their songs, rather than a four track recorder. If you look closely into The Beatles songs, you can see various glaring mistakes that were hard to correct because the whole band was playing at once, and editing a single track was next to impossible.
Then, around the same time, small groups started to pop up throughout the world. Groups that were influenced by the likes of The Beatles. These groups became quite popular because they mainly concentrated on harmony vocals and very less on the ACTUAL background music. This tended to add a more melodious sound to the song and people enjoyed the simplicity of it. Of course, examples for these types of groups are the BSB, Blue and Westlife. These groups generally had six to seven members. These groups sang their songs on a simple rock beat, without any frilly chord progressions. The main thing about these groups were also the simplicity of their lyrics. They wrote songs about love, breaking up, losing someone…things that happened in everyone’s lives and people found it easy to relate to them. These groups also had exceptionally handsome men (don’t ask me how they were all handsome; I figure that’s just a coincidence.)
So that was the beginning of the pop culture. Rock bands generally wrote more lyrically complex stuff that went well with the music. Take Green Day’s Basket Case for example. It didn’t focus on people; it focused on the narrator who describes his fear of anxiety and when he tought himself to be going mental. Most rock bands still write lyrically complex stuff, and people just don’t find time to decipher its actual meaning.
Then, when computers became more complex, people found out that it was pretty easy for them to try their hand at singing too. They used special effects and filters. They “auto-tuned” their voices, to make their song more appealing to people. It was around this time that rapping became a popular genre too. Artists used existing technology to sing faster, while making sure people still followed their songs. These type of songs weren’t family friendly either. They were (are) hugely popular among rebellious teenagers, who tried to act cool.
The world turned upside down when a singer, with absolutely NO talent reached the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot Charts. And he achieved this, how? Auto-tuning, of course! It was unfortunate that this fellow was also cute (as most girls and some guys describe him as), so that helped to cement his career. You may wonder whom I’m talking about? Justin Bieber, of course! Girls swooned after him, taking his every word to be coming from God Himself. The media had no right but to support him. The imagination of a million teenage girls storming their office buildings gave them the shudders.
These girls generally followed the musician(?) without any sense. If a completely obscene thing came out of his mouth, the media and these girls brushed it aside like it was nothing. But when a more prominent band, who have been around for years and have won the respect of a million people through hard work utter a bad word on television, then they shun him or her.
