What are some reason that is displayed on the death metal growl?

Real question made by RabbitM: What do people see in the Death Metal Growl?

I simply don’t get how all that screaming and growling can be appealing as “music”. What do people see in that kind of music? Please don’t tell me it’s the lyrics because when they get that growl going they sound so retarded the words they are spewing are unintelligible.

It’s pure emotion. Not everyone has to like it, people have different tastes. I’d suggest not listening to grindcore if you think Death metal is hard to understand.

Listen to these songs, they have screaming but they are awesome.

The “feel” of it, I dunno, I don’t always like it, there are vocalists who do it well and vocalists who I think do it poorly, if I had to tell you my favorite it’d have to be Mikael Akerfeldt, he does clean vocals pretty well too.

As an artistic expression or whatever, the blast beats and the frantic high speed riffs, it only makes sense to have extreme vocals too, but for me the vocals are more or less just nother layer of sound, they’re more there for the way they sound than they are for conveying the lyrics.

People just like the sound. You like singing. Well other people like a different sound. And it does take talent and it can be judged just as well as singing can.

It adds to the atmosphere of the music. Let’s say I’m listening to some Kalmah, and the song has a harsh winter theme to it (maybe some wind blowing at the beginning of the songs, etc.). If clean, high pitched vocals were to some and start singing, it would ruin the “harsh” sound of the song. But, if they opt for the growl (like in their second to last album), it gives it another source of feeling, adding to the icy winter atmosphere of the song.

In other words, the vocals become another instrument, rather than a way to convey direct words. If you catch some words here and there, great, they’ll add to the song, but by not being able to hear everything, it adds to the mystery of the song and strengthens the atmosphere of it.

On a side note, it does take awhile to get used to growls or screaming. I only recently got into Black Metal because I couldn’t get into the raspy vocals or the raw production beforehand. But I grew accustomed to it over time, and now I love certain BM bands.

Depends how it’s used.

If they are spwed randomly and incoherently, i can care less about them.

If they are so low and guttural that you can’t possibly hear the lyrics, then I just take them as antother instrument as the bands wants the audience too (in this case the band puts out lyrics as a joke, or just complements to the “instrumental”)

When this type of singing is done right, (and you do understand “what they’re saying” after a while) and even mixed with “singing” vocals, that band would be a plus on my list.

I myself hate high pitched vocals that are used incorrectly, sometimed it sounds so annoying I want to rip out the singer’s vocal chords

Figure out far better?
