Maria is a soprano so you need to be able to sing high. She has a fun spirit, she’s charming, witty, loves the Von trapp kids. You have to be able to show self confidence. Maria is a huge part and requires lots of talent!! Play it off like your a pro and break a leg!!

Well, first of all – Maria is NOT a soprano role. It’s a mezzo-soprano part, but with a light, young sound, which makes many people think it’s a high soprano part.

Second – Maria is also not “charming and witty.” She’s a bit of a bumpkin – inexperienced, naive and innocent. She gets into trouble at the Abbey simply because she’s impulsive and high-spirited, and she’s sent off to be governess to the Von Trapp children as a way of calming her down. The Captain falls in love with her because of her honesty and genuine goodness.

At the audition, don’t worry about “putting on” any kind of character. From the way you’ve written your question, it sounds like you could act the part of Maria best just by being yourself.
