When I link in HTML to a file using The browser opens the file and starts playing it in a window… Is there a way that I can FORCE the file to download instead of play in the browser aside from compressing the file to a different format?

I think there is not a way to do so. What you can do, however, is put the file you wish to “force download” in a compressed zipped folder. Since the folder is compressed and zipped, the contents will not open in the web browser and the zipped folder is unable to serve as a directory thus forcing it to download. Although it is extra work, it will automatically download when a user clicks on the link.

What you could do is post a little note stating that users should right click and select the Download Linked File/Save Target as option.

Well I am not quite clear with your question but hope this helps.

Does the website has a download link for the music? Does the file starts playing in the browser instead of downloading when you click the download link? If you have answered these two questions as YES, then its simple. Simply right click on the download link and choose the option “save link as” or “save target as”.

If the website does not allow you to download the file then use some software like Audacity etc to download any sounds from websites.

Good luck

whether or not the file “plays” or “saves” is dependant on the settings of the operating system of the user’s PC. In windows it is in file types in the folder options. it can therefore be changed by HTML.

Instead you may be able to do something else by using CGI or advanced javascript. Like automaticcally enclosing it in a ZIP.
